VIBRATION vs. VIBRATO
Maria Callas & Renata Tebaldi
More and more we are hearing voices with vibrato. When the larynx and the tongue are engaged, this causes vibrato. Using the muscles of the neck requires physical effort. This effort (called support) does not allow the cords to vibrate freely in the windpipe - below and behind the neck muscles. A voice that can project uses the energetic body, not the physical body.
Vibration gives the voice presence. This presence is your true sound - no air pressure. The secret is air compression. This uses the energetic body and produces clarity of sound. Squillo.
A You Tube video of Callas vs Tebaldi called The Tigress and the Dove demonstrates the difference between making the sound happen and allowing the sound to happen. Notice the clarity of Tebaldi's sound. With that amazing instrument, the Callas voice was gone at 40.
