BEL CANTO

AlfredoKraus.jpg

"The Italian school of singing known as Bel Canto {literally "beautiful singing"} emerged in the seventeenth century in Florence, and spread during that century to other main musical centres in Italy: Venice, Rome, Naples and later Milan."
’The Art of Singing,’   Lucie Manen

Many Italian teachers of voice immigrated to the United States and Canada, bringing  the Bel Canto tradition with them. Somewhere in the span of time we still talk about Bel Canto, but sadly hear little of it today. Having thrown this great tradition out the window, we are now flooded with quick fix methods. These do not produce the ease, clarity and power of the original Bel Canto sound. We must tune our ears to the art as it should be--free and clear.

Please give a listen to two perfect examples of Bel Canto:

TERESA STRATAS, soprano

ALFREDO KRAUS, tenor

REMEMBER…..
