THE EGG AND I
The shell of an egg is a delicate thing. The vocal cords are also delicate. Press too hard and they crack open. Who cares? The singer just rushes ahead and breaks the shell...……BUT the insides, yolk and all, fall out. As a result, hoarseness, pitch problems and discomfort develop. It also hurts! That was PLAN A. Now what?
PLAN ‘A’ DID NOT PROJECT! ON TO PLAN ‘B.’
Not wanting to break the shell, the singer decides to HARD BOIL the egg. If we add heat--SUPPORT--we can harden the insides of the egg. It takes time to get the muscles to GRAB and manipulate the sound, but eventually the egg becomes solid inside. With more EFFORT he can push the hard boiled egg out the front of the face into the mask. Eureka! It makes a BIG sound. Result……..
WE'VE KILLED THE LIFE INSIDE THE EGG!
PLAN ‘B’ works for a while. At this point, young singers can manipulate the muscles of the neck with a minimum of effort. But as the body grows older, the singer must work harder and harder. The muscles rebel! With cords of iron some singers can soldier on. Most fall by the wayside. As the singer ADDS more support, the muscles give way and the vibrato becomes a wobble. Now what?
