A Philosophy of Singing

WHY SING?

I guess we all have invited people to hear us sing or hear us play an instrument, but have we ever thought about what that statement really says? Probably not. It does, however, bring us to a very important part of why we study singing. Did you really mean to invite them to hear you, or did you invite them to hear the fruits of your studies? We say things very carelessly sometimes, and these clichés really express something quite different than what we intended. Or do they?

We should all be very eager to get up and perform. It is the reason we study. But if the reason for the audience to be invited is simply to observe how well we look, and how well we are dressed, then the reason for study is lost.
